  • Metadata cleanup is performed when a domain controller is forcibly removed from Active Directory Domain Services (AD DS) as due to a hardware failureof the server, which leads to the decommissioning of hosting, and due to the fact that the server may be unreasonably downgraded in the rating. Metadata cleanup removes stagnant data and ADDS records, most of which are identified as domain operators for the replication system. It simultaneously transfers or maintains all of the Flexible Authorized User Management (FSMO) roles that have been retired by a particular domain controller.

Purge metadata can also be done in one of the following ways:

  • Purge server metadata using GUI tools.
  • Clear the web hosting server metadata from the command line.
  • Note
If you’re getting all the “Access Denied” errors when someone uses one of these metadata cleanup methods, make sure the experts say the computer object and NTDS object settings for the controlled domain aren’t protected from accidental deletion. To make sure To do this, right-click the Drive object or the NTDS Settings toy, click Properties, click Object, and uncheck Protect object from accidental deletion.

In the Active Directory Users and Computers section, if you click View and then Advanced Features, the Object Assignment tab appears.

Previously, you had to perform a separate metadata cleanup process.

You can also use the services and Active Directory Sites Console (Dssite.msc) which can remove the domain controller computer’s credit account, which also completes the cleanup quicklymetadata. However, Active Directory Sites and Services will not automatically align metadata unless you and your family members remove the Computer Account NTDS Settings entry in Dssite.msc.

If you’re using Windows Server 2008, Windows Server 2008 R2, or RSAT versions of Dsa of.msc or Dssite. You msc, you can automatically purge metadata associated with domain controllers that are running earlier versions of Windows operating systems.
